The recording of animal movement patterns has become an essential aspect in conservation biology and research. For instance for the prediction of changing environments or natural disasters.
Movebank is a freely accessible database of animal movements for everyone hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior.
With its help scientists around the globe can publish, share and analyse their data. Sensitive data can be stored securely and protected from unauthorized access.
Animal senders record complex movements and environmental data to then transmit the results to mobile devices, via the mobile network or to connected data centers via the ISS (see ICARUS) and finally to Movebank.
Mobile devices enable researchers to query the movement data in the field and analyse it immediately, e.g. via Firetail.
Every single day 9000 senders are pumping roughly 3 million entries from roughly 3000 taxa into Movebank subsuming more than 2.4 billion positions, metadata and environmental variables.
Schäuffelhut Berger cooperates closely with the researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior to adapt the software infrastructure to an increasing number of challenges, to develop interfaces and to enable smooth data transition during daily operation.
Starting from Jul 1st, 2016 we’ve been cooperating with the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior on the ICARUS project, funded by the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt). As of march 2020 the receiving antenna has been in testmode on the International Space Station, ISS.
Measurement data is transmitted into space. The scientific pilot phase has begun on Sept 10, 2020. The data is collected in the Movebank database.
Schäuffelhut Berger is responsible for the processing, visualisation and analysis of all sender data.
